Hi Ed & rlug,

I have an enormous product validation project I'm working on for work right
now. Even though we are a M$ shop, I have decided to do all of the work,
including the project management docs, using Linux and OpenOffice. I'm saving
all of the files in M$ Office formats, and nobody has noticed the difference
yet. It's going to be interesting when I connect my laptop up to the LCD
projector in the first status meeting, and people on the team notice that it
has RH 8.0 on it, and all of my project and doc files come up in open source
tools! Everyone will notice right away that I'm not using Windows... I can't
wait.

So far I've sent several docs to the project manager, who commented once that
my bullets were lined up oddly, but otherwise has made no mention of
problems. I know the bullets and tables do not always look the same between
Star Office / OpenOffice and M$ Office, but I couldn't find a reason not to
use these tools.

I'm preparing a very brief cost analysis doc to show that I actually saved
time and considerable money using open source instead of M$. I think it will
go a long way toward opening some key people up to the idea that there really
are alternatives out there. We don't need to "go with the flow," and in fact
it will ultimately reduce our operating costs and headaches if we don't.
We'll see...

Take care,
-Gary
