In my opinion, software raid is *more* reliable than hardware. When you're using a 3ware card or similar, you have a single point of failure. You can lose the entre array if the controller fails.
With software raid, assuming one drive per controller, if you lose a controller you only lose the one drive. I've also had problems with driver support with specialized cards such as the 3ware. It's better now, but a couple of years ago it was always "exciting" to see if a new kernel from Redhat would support the 3ware reliably.
