Greetings Jim & William,
mp4 is short for MPEG-4, which is another multimedia encoding standard.
If you are an iTunes music store shopper, then you are probably already
familiar with it by another extension, AAC. (Except that Apple adds a
bit of DRM to the encoding).
The funny thing about MPEG-4 is that it can act as both a container object
and as a codec. Fortunately MP4 containers can only hold MP4 encoded
multimedia.
Check that. MPEG-4 container objecst are also backwards compatible with
previous MPEG standards.
DIVX and XVID are also MPEG4 variants -- for what that's worth.
Here is more technical detail on mp4:

You should be able to play non-DRM protected mp4 files with Mplayer and
VLC, and ~possibly~ with RealPlayer10
If you are feeling adventurous, you could check out mpeg4ip

You can dig up a lot more information with a quick google.com/linux
search (http://tinyurl.com/8zwpy)
Hopefully someone else will chime in with some specific information on a
good player/plugin combination.
Regards,
Colin
