I was thinking about getting a NAS for the office but I don't see why they need to be so expensive. It looks like I could do the same thing with some hard drives, a RAID controller and Samba. Am I missing something here?
Time, effort, and some niggling problems with external drive support (e.g. lockups and uninterruptible sleeps on USB and FireWire drives). I run about 2TB of external storage on a homebrew Linux NAS. It works reasonably well, but I have to reboot the system about once a week when a drive goes to sleep and never returns (usually during heavy disk I/O, of course). Overall, though, it works well--might even work better with external SATA instead of USB/FW.
