*whoops* this should have gone to the list.

Subject: RE: [RLUG] Samba and Active Directory
Rick,
Our overall consensus at the meeting last night was: if those maintaining the
server don't know how to run Linux, it is a bad idea to install it. While the
server will probably run fine without administrator interaction, it still needs
administrator interaction for maintenance purposes (software updates, etc.).
Overall, administration would probably be a nightmare for Windows
administrators.
On the flip side, you can run Samba 3.x as an Active Directory member server --
granted that Kerberos, and LDAP are configured to interface to the Windows
domain controller. AFAIK nobody has configured a Samba server for this
purpose... yet.
I just got a new file server for one of my networks. I chose to build it
myself because it's cheaper, and I'm never impressed by COTS systems -- or
custom built systems for that matter (never order from Monarch Computers).
Overall specs are:
1x Asus K8N-DL (has 8 onboard SATA, and price was only $260)
2x Opteron 242
2x 1GB Corsair DDR
8x Seagate 250GB SATA150
1x Maxtor 250GB PATA (for backup)
1x External USB HDD enclosure (for backup)
1x 550W power supply
1x Chenbro server case
1x DVD burner
1x PCIe 128MB graphics card (overkill... but cost $40)
1x APC 1500VA UPS
(If you want the actual "wishlist" from newegg.com let me know, and I'll send
it to you)
Overall cost of the complete system: $2800 + cable ties ~= $2810. I had a
budget of $3000, and came in well under (always makes you look good ;).
All parts came from newegg.com. They arrived in 3-days.
Configuration:
- Disks:
I've created 4 partitions on each of the 8 Seagate drives. The first is for
/boot, the second for /, the third for swap, and the fourth for everything
else. I'm using a software RAID 1 across 7 disks for the /boot partition, a
software RAID 5 across 7 disks for the / parition, and another software RAID 5
across 7 disks for the "everything else" partition. The 8th drive is used as a
hot spare for each RAID. While this isn't necessary for /boot I configured it
this way for consistency. Finally, I'm using LVM2 to create logical volumes for
/opt /var /tmp /usr and /home from the "everything else" partition. That way
these partitions can be expanded in the future if the need arises.
Overall storage for /home is 1.4TB.
- Filesystem:
I like ReiserFS. I've never had problems with it, and it has good performance.
So... /, /opt, /var, /tmp, /usr, and /home are formatted with it. /boot is
using ext2.
- Operating System:
Gentoo Linux... of course ;)
- Purpose:
File server using Samba and NFS, and backup server using rsync. Samba will be
used to configure the server as an active directory member on the Windows
network. NFS will be used for Mac, and Linux data.
Progress:
Finished testing RAM. Now I'm on to the install. I'll keep everyone posted if
there's interest.
I guess the bottom line is this: you can save a lot of money using Linux if
you have someone that can maintain it.

That's the tough part because I don't know. A customer came to me asking
for a NAS and he is asking for Windows 2003 on the NAS. I inquired as to why
and he said so it can be a part of AD. I figure there has got to be a way
to do that w/o MS but since I haven't done it I don't want to offer a
solution I can't fulfill.

Rick,
I'll be installing a Samba Active Directory member server (as a file
server) in the next week or so. I'll let you know how it goes.
I have configured a Samba PDC. Everything is running fine... and it's
great to have the Linux backend. I can't imagine it would be much
different for Active Directory integration. What are you trying to do
though?

Does anyone have any experience connecting Samba to Windows Active

to
know if it is worth pursuing - is it too much of a pain?
