Going back in time a bit here.

There is a utility for Gentoo that can show what programs an ebuild contains. It is called qpkg, and is in the gentoolkit ebuild. Check it out if you haven't already.

Damon,

I believe the iwconfig program comes in the wireless-tools package. To
merge it onto your system type the following as root:

# emerge wireless-tools

Let me know if I'm wrong, and I'll look again ;)

On a side note, I suggest you emerge gentoolkit. It has a lot of neat
apps for use with portage (check out etcat, and quickpkg after you've
built it).

I have the universal CD, and printed the handbook out for reference. It seems
there are additional downloads you have to make to get it to work. I think I
will stay wired instead.

The wireless adapter is a broadcom 802.11g adapter w/bluetooth. HP does not
idetify the maker.

I did finally make it through the whole Gentoo install process the hardway
(CAT5 connection). I am confused however as I compiled in pcmcia support and
wireless support in the kernel, but don't have the iwconfig program. Does
anyone know where this comes from?

I am now installing Gentoo on my laptop. I downloaded the universal CD ,
but cannot seem to get it to install without an internet connection. In an
attempt to satisfy the network connection I tried enabling the wireless
connection without success. I even tried running Knoppix to get wireless
running, also with no success. Does anyone have any suggestions to either
problem?

Damon

I've always started with the minimal disc and a network connection, but
with the universal CD you should be able to install without the network.
The install docs at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2005.1/index.xml
should get you headed in the right direction. If you run into any
specific issues, I'd be happy to help.
As far as the wireless goes, do you know what chipset you are using? I've
gotten lucky and have never had to resort to the ndis wrapper stuff, but
depending on your hardware, you may have to. I've always found the
seattlewireless site to be very informative. They also have lots of
quality links. http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/HardwareComparison
