Hey John,
You should be able to mount your existing hard disks and write to them.
Before you do though, what are the filesystems on your current hard disk?
You can also save to USB or Firewire devices, which you were attempting.
Could you give us more information on what you tried to do that ended up
messing up your USB drive?
What else?! You could save to a networked computer via numerous network
protocols. Do you have another computer on your network, and, if so, what
OS is it running?

Hello:
I have gotten a hold of several Knoppix distros and the O'Reily book on
Knoppix. It all seems pretty cool but I haven't been able to figure out how
to save files anywhere. It doesn't seem that there would be a copy of Open
Office or the Gimp in the distribution if all work were ephemeral and lost
on saving. Got me stumped. Tried finding something in the Knoppix Hacks
book but I didn't get it. Seem to have buggared up a memory stick in the
process as well.
Anyone out there done anything with Knoppix that they were able to save?
Thanks
John Doucette
