(skip to bottom for Aid4Mail answer... otherwise I must rant
about a random tangent... trying to help friends and it goes all
wrong)

Ouch... yeah I had a similar nightmare... well.. just in that I
a friend kept asking me about Linux and wanted to try it. So I
recommended Ubuntu since that's what my dad's been using for a
few weeks now without any trouble. He made some space with
partition magic and we rebooted into the Ubuntu installer. He
became observably distressed when the partitioner wrapper said
warning this might erase all of your data etc and wanted to bail
out. I tried to calm him down a bit... anyways it just wasn't
meant to be I guess... I checked from the command line and
partition magic hadn't set the proper type. So I told him look
we can just change it here. He said well no I don't think we
should go forward because I would never be able to do this on my
own... no worries I said... I've done this a million times (and
I have).

Note to self: if someone doesn't want to continue don't push it
;)

After some reassurance. I changed the type of the partition he had
made in partition magic to Linux (83)... the swap partition he'd made
showed the correct type. Anyways at this point we go back to the
installer to format the partition and I think he finally
couldn't take the anxiety of losing his windows install if
something went awry so we aborted. He goes back into partition
magic and it says that the drive has a bad partition table!?

WTF... I mean... I've never had parted go wrong on me... I even
had the developer ssh into my iBook in 1999 to get the code
working on PPC. I imagine it's a partition magic bug... but who
knows anyways... so now I feel like an ass... oh well just had
to rant about that. ;-) In any case his system still works
fine... it's only that he can no longer use partition magic on
that drive. Anyone have ideas? All I did was change the type
of an existing partition and write the changes. Does partition
magic store some non-standard data in or around the partition
map or boot sector which parted may have munged?

Hehe... and then your computer runs slow as molasses on a cold
day. ;-) Oh well... best of luck with that.

Some people should just stay with Windows or MacOS... I'm
convinced...

Have you tried kmailcvt? Or run Aid4Mail through wine. Here's
the url for kamilcvt:

  http://kmailcvt.klik.atekon.de/

It doesn't have as many features as Aid4Mail but should do the
job...

peace,
