Joan,

I have had reasonably good luck with the export/import of outlook email into the Mozilla/Thunderbird
email.

In spite of her fears, I would recommend you try it.  First of all it is NOT going to wipe out her Outlook
stuff.  It's an export "copy" !  The original stuff stays in Outlook - so you can try it and verify whether or not
ther is "garbage text."  As long as you have the settings right in the Mozilla/Thunderbird to accept and
display html mail, there should not be a problem.   If that works and your friend is still insistent about using
Outlook, I would total wipe and remove the current Outlook from her Windows, download a FRESH copy from M$,
re-install from the new then import her old mail back from Mozilla/Thunderbird.  Sounds like a lot of work,
but it's not really.  Most of the processes are automated - so it's just time consuming.

If you can convince her on Thunderbird by showing it works, better still.

(I would also remove as much of IE as possible, download the latest and re-install that too.)

Finally - it sounds like she is a bit of an electronic pack rat.  Three years of mail?????  Maybe she needs to do
some house cleaning.

Hi Everyone,

I use Webmail, but I've been trying to help a friend that didn't listen to me...she used Norton SystemWorks 2003 Pro.  She tried to update, then upgrade, when neither worked she asked for advice.  I told her to back-up, she didn't.  I tried to remove all of Norton I could, I used ExpressAssist to back-up her Internet Explorer and Outlook Express stuff.  Then I re-installed her WinXP Home E-Machine (Office had stopped working) and added Vcom SystemSuite.

Alas, when I restored her backed-up IE and OE stuff, those files did stuff to the Registry that Vcom SS doesn't know how to fix automatically.   She's found a few other areas where things are acting strange, too.  So in the near future I'll be re-doing it again, since she doesn't like Vcom SS.  Other co-workers tell her all she needs is AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware SE, and SpywareBlaster.

I can't get her to use Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, nor Linux as no clerical jobs in Reno mention those programs :-(  I was thinking of trying ThunderBird, but I was afraid the export and import of her HTML mail would become "garbage text" (her words for it).

Do I have any way to save her Outlook Express mail like this Aid4Mail can do with zip files by using a Linux LiveCD or some other way or program in Windows?  I offered her a Yahoo sub-mail folder, but she has 3 year's of mail on her PC by way of Charter.com.  Doing it one message at a time isn't something she wants to do.

Thanks in advance,
Joan
