Hmm... actually, there is dependencies on both. RBH is using the client library liblustreapi, which has modification in almost each Lustre version. There is now a dynamic version of it, but I'm not sure it exists in Lustre 2.3 So your RBH version will be compiled for a specific liblustreapi version with specific workaround sometimes.
But you were right that MDS version also matters. Depending on Lustre version, MDS behavior also changes.
