Aurélien, thanks for your reply.

For question 1, client and server versions, I suppose it would be safest and simple for us to simply require a robinhood client machine for every version of the lustre server we run so lustre versions can match. So this question is perhaps not worth much thought.

The second issue about multiple robinhood modes I'm much more interested in.

Thank you again,
Scott

I have 2 questions -

1) If using a filesystem with differing client and server versions of
lustre, which robinhood rpm is appropriate? I am testing on a 2.3 server
/ 2.4 client - I chose 2.4 for robinhood and it worked fine. I assume
what matters most is server side support for things like changelog and
hsm?
Hmm... actually, there is dependencies on both.
RBH is using the client library liblustreapi, which has modification in
almost each Lustre version. There is now a dynamic version of it, but
I'm not sure it exists in Lustre 2.3
So your RBH version will be compiled for a specific liblustreapi version
with specific workaround sometimes.

But you were right that MDS version also matters. Depending on Lustre
version, MDS behavior also changes.
We must check this with Thomas to verify which workaround is needed for
2.3 and 2.4 to see what will be the better choice for you.

2) I've read documentation but there a basic thing I'm not really clear
on - do the various robinhood "mode" versions simply provide differing
utilities and configuration templates, or do they also provide a
different database schema or other major differences?
Yes they do have a different schema.
  I don't know about
hsm, but I'd assume tmp fs mode could be seen as a subset of archive
mode (instead of archive, delete..)?

It is very likely we would want to use multiple modes on one filesystem.
I think that you can enable purge policies also in archive mode, so that
should be fine for tmpfs.

Thomas could give you more advices next month.
