check out TTYPE in telnet negotiation, however not many mud clients are
anything more than dumb terminals, text and color codes, zmud supports telnet
negotiation, mushclient does too .. tf supports it partially, and the rest just
bits and pieces, with gmud being on the bottom of the list, supporting nothing
:)

the only way i found to get some information from the client is to check as
many telnet negotiation options as possible and then do an 'educated guess' ;)

also if the client supports MXP [which is only zmud and mushclient] you can get
info that way, usually client name, version, and on mushclient whether it is
registered or not. but you will need to have telnet negotiation already in
place to find out if the client supports mxp.
