OLC 2.01? You mean that crappy OLC that crashes ROM every few seconds? Hmm...

But, as for some of the other things that our friend wanted to know:

The ROM code base last update (at least public update) was 2.4b6, the original ROM is still being run, although not by the original creator(s). You can see it at www.rom.org. ROM has developed a slew of off-shoots (or as they are technically referred to as: dereritives). The most famous among those would be ROT (Realms of Thoth) which basically turned ROM into a power-leveling PK power-house (I like that description). I have no idea as to where you would find the website for that MUD, although you can get it at ftp.game.org/pub/mud/diku/merc/rom. Other off-shoots include GhostMUD, Anatolia, and I'm sure a few other ones I can't remember at this moment, but should be listed on that ftp.

I know I sounded skeptical of OLC 2.01, but it will give you a good idea of what has been done, and could be done with ROM. There have also been online clan editing (Gary McNickle's gedit code), online helpfile editing (Kermit's hedit code), online social editing (can't remember who wrote it) and a slew of other resources.

One site I would suggest you look at would be www.kyndig.com which hosts a large selection of public snippets for ROM. It will give you an idea of what people have been doing with the ROM code base. As far as "active" development: as far as I know, there is no ROM-based MUD that is actively being developed and released. Most projects are done individually. Since you are new to ROM, and have experience with larger MUDs, I would assume you come from the GemstoneIII hell hole, or possibly even Realms of Despair, although if you came from RoD you should have more knowledge about ROM-like MUDs.

At any rate, a run down of things to look at:

www.kyndig.com - ROM codes, articles, and knowledge compendium.
ftp.game.org/pub/mud/diku/merc/rom - ROM and all it's dereritives
www.mudconnect.com - Listing of many MUDs...many of them ROM :p
www.rom.org - Rivers of MUD (which hosts this mailing list).

I hope I was helpful, and no, I don't think you should have read the archives first. You can spend hours searching the archives, or you can ask questions and someone who isn't rude will answer them eventually.

Good luck!

Michael Pittaway
