if startup is not found as a command when using "./startup &" in the 
"area" folder of your mudbase, then you need to take the following step:

chmod 770 startup


That makes your startup script read/write/execute to User and Group.
("man chmod" for more information)

Hopefully this will assist you. 

If not, please do the following:

ls -l startup

(once again, in your area folder)

And paste the output in your next reply, the more information people 
have, the better they can help you instead of just writing posts like
Tom's over there, with the "READ THE MANUAL/FAQ" attitude.
