OK, a few questions to clear up the issue a bit...
1. What OS are you running under?
2. Am I correct in understanding that the log file records the call to the
copyover function, the execution of the copyover function, and the game
starting up again?
3. Can you open another telnet session to the MUD after the copyover
attempt?
4. Can you attach to the process with gdb while it's "asleep"?

    I'm not familiar with the codebase, but I'll do my best to help. :-)
