Sorry for starting this thread and then contributing nothing to it.  I've
always been more of a lurker on this list.  To contribute to this thread,
I'll say that success (for me) is broken into a few areas.
 
The first degree of success, as I see it, is measured by how close I came to
meeting my initial code goal(s).  If my initial goal was to modify the
character creation process, and I completed it, then that is a success for
me.

The second degree of my success will be measured by the playability of my
MUD. This part will be largely determined by the complexity of the game
mechanics, combined with the preference of the targeted age group.  Some
players will be happy with just the directional and kill commands, while
others will prefer more complex systems.

The third and final degree of my success will be based entirely on how well
I think I've done.  If I think I've failed at achieving my goal(s), then in
my own mind I'll have created a failure (even if the MUD has a constant 30+
players on).
