Actually
If you're using the stock startup script, try :
 nohup ./startup &
 Nohup will tell it to keep going when you disconnect (hang up the
signal).
./startup & will put it in the background so that you can do other
things in the shell.
I'm most certain this has been covered in the list a few times though.
Next time, might want to check the archives before posting.

That would be because of the fact that you are running it from the
command line, instead of from the background.  I would recommend some
sort of mud startup script, or manually running it in the background.
