A Sky News investigation has discovered that babies
are being traded in eastern Europe for as little as £350 per child. Sky's
Laurence Lee found it took just a few minutes in the Romanian capital Bucharest
to find parents willing to hand over their young ones for handfuls of cash.Lee
posed with a colleague as a British couple desperate to adopt.
They first headed for an open-air market where they spoke to one man begging.
He offered his wife's unborn child for 500 euros.
Later, in a village Lee found one man whose extended family were living in a
single building.
He said he was prepared to sell one of his grandchildren. "Everything is
possible," he told him.
Lee says that while it was difficult to gain a clear picture of the extent of
child trafficking in countries like Romania, figures from the United Nations
indicate that 1.2 million children are trafficked across borders worldwide each
year.
A large number of these children come from eastern Europe and many end up in
the UK at the mercy of child traffickers.
However, until recently the UK did not even have legislation that defined the
trafficking of people as a crime.
Laws making the trafficking of people for prostitution a crime first came
into effect in 2002 and carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years.
