Summer seminarThe European Union 2005 and beyond"That will be held in
Kotor (Serbia and Montenegro)14 - 16 July 2005
Organisers:
The School will be organised by:
1. The Luxembourg Institute for European and International
Studies, and
2. The Institute for European Studies, Belgrade
Participants and Lecturers:
The main target group of participants are junior faculty, young scholars and
political and NGO activists interested to view the process of European
integrations in critical and philosophical way. There will be up to 20
participants altogether. Up to ten participants will be selected from Serbia
and Montenegro and an equal number will come from elsewhere in the region of
South - East Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina /Republic of Srpska and
Federation/, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, The Republic of Macedonia, and
Romania).
The course lecturers (resource persons) are associates of LIEIS and IES as
well as people involved in EU integrations in Serbia and Montenegro.
Accommodation and Transportation
The Summer Seminar will be held in hotel Vardar in the coastal town of Kotor
(Cattaro), in Montenegro, Serbia and Motenegro. The organisers will cover
air-flights from Belgrade to airport Tivat (just five km away from Kotor),
as well as transportation to Belgrade from the region. Travel costs of
applicants applying outside of the region of SEE can be covered only up to
the average transportation costs of participants from the region.
Arrival Day
All the participants should arrive to Kotor on Wednesday July 13, in
afternoon all evening hours. Late afternoon flight will be reserved for
participants flying from Belgrade to Montenegro.
Rooms in Hotel Vardar are double. The hotel is situated in the centre of the
mediaeval town of Kotor.
Departure Day
All the participants should depart from Kotor on Sunday July 17, in
afternoon hours. Early evening flight will be reserved for participants from
Belgrade.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All the participants are expected to attend all the
lectures. Organisers are not in a position to offer places to participants
who will be able to attend only part of lectures or who will not be able to
be present at the seminar all the three days.
VISA REGIME: Nationals of the following countries do not need visas for
Serbia and Montenegro: EU nationals (including European zone), nationals of
Bulgaria, (FYR) Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of
Croatia. Citizens of Albania do not need visas for Montenegro. Citizens of
Romania need visas to enter Serbia and the Institute for European Studies
will send to selected participants appropriate letters of invitation. Visas
for Romanian citizens can be picked up in Bucharest or Timisoara.
Note for participants from Romania and Bulgaria: There are no direct flights
between Belgrade and Sofia and Bucharest. Therefore the best way to come to
Belgrade for participants from Bulgaria and Romania is to travel by train.
The organisers will cover expenses of an overnight in Belgrade for
participants from Romania and Bulgaria in both directions.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS:
1st - 19th June 2005
On 21st June all the applicants will be informed if their applications have
been accepted.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Participants should have at the very least a BA degree, and preferably an
MA degree in the social sciences or humanities, or be political or NGO
leaders in their community.
2. All participants should be proficient in English.
3. Participants should be nationals of SEE countries or other neighbouring
countries. Nationals of other countries can also apply but the organisers
can not guarantee that it will be able to cover all their travel costs.
All transportation and accommodation costs for selected participants from
SEE are covered by the LIEIS and other minor donors.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
All prospective applicants are expected to:
1. To send their CVs.
2. Send a short letter of motivation explaining in up to two
hundred words why they wish to be participants of the School
3. Send a letter of recommendation written by a senior scholar.
TOPICS:
The International Summer Seminar in Kotor will be dedicated to critical
consideration of currant stage of European integrations with special
reference to the Luxembourg Presidency in the EU in the first half of 2005.
It will also deal with the most relevant problems that the EU has faced. The
seminar will last three days (Thursday, Friday and Saturday).
The following topics will be discussed:
1. The EU after the Luxembourg presidency
2. The future of the EU with/out a constitution.
3. Enlarging further: Romania, Bulgaria. And, after?
4. The Turkish predicament
5. The Balkan area and/in the EU
6. The Western Balkans, the last region in queue
7. Living outside the EU: Russia and others
8. Financing the EU policies
9. The global economic contest: How competitive is the EU?
10. European Civil Society
11. Social cohesion and migration in the enlarging EU
12. The possible role of the EU in world politics
