Romania: Diekat and Athena to modernise train stations 16:21 - 07 June 2005 - Diekat and Athena are among the four contsruction companies picked Romania for the upgrade of five of its major railway stations, Romania's Transport Minister Gheorghe Dobre said.
The contracts were signed today. Greek construction firm Diekat was chosen to modernise the train stations in the northwestern city of Cluj-Napoca and in Iasi, northeastern Romania while Greek construction firm, Athena, will modernise the railway station in the city of Constanta. The German construction company Wiebe will modernise and refurbish the train station in the city of Craiova, while Israeli Poldmir Construction was selected to upgrade the station in the city of Timisoara. "The modernisation of the five stations is part of a bigger plan for the upgrade of 150 stations. Construction works at the five stations will start this year and will last until 2008," the Mister said. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a 24 million euro ($29.5 million) loan to finance the project, guaranteed by the Romanian finance ministry. The 15-year loan has a three-year grace period.
