It is in the Balkans that the EU should either demonstrate that its transformative power can work in regions where states are weak and societies are divided or it will sink into irrelevance. The Balkans is the make-or-break test for the union. The EU can survive the premature death of its constitution but the EU cannot survive a new Srebrenica.“ Ivan Krastev, political scientist and  chairman of the board of the Centre for Liberal Strategies   “Western Balkans are still a source of both concern, and hope and an optimistic scenario cannot become reality without the support for the Balkan states to achieve their European goals and for promoting the “open-doors” policy“ Traian Basescu, President of Romania         Interesul Europei Occidentale pentru stabilizarea si democratizarea Europei de sud-est capata pe masura ce Uniunea Europeana se extinde si se transforma o importanta tot mai mare. Alaturi de numeroase initiative europene, Fundatia Konrad Adenauer isi propune sa sustina acest proces printr-un nou proiect regional “Consolidarea statului de drept in Romania si Europa de Sud-Est” axat in primul rand pe o colaborare regionala intre tarile SEE si crearea unei retele ca baza comuna de lucru. Rolul pe care Romania il joaca sau il poate juca in acesta regiune ca factorde stabilitate se concretizeaza in functia de coordonator pe care Biroul din Bucuresti al Fundatiei Konrad Adenauer il preia in cadrul acestui proiect. Proiectul debuteaza printr-o conferinta care va avea loc pe 30. 06 - 1. 07 la Hotel Howard Johnson Grand Plaza si  care isi propune sa aduca in dezbatere subiecte prioritare pentru agenda publica din regiune in urmatorii ani: constituirea/consolidarea unui stat de drept democratic care sa funcţioneze în mod corespunzător; stabilitate si cooperare in regiunea Balcanilor, democratie stabila si durabila.
