Hello Jennifer,

"A framework in Rational Rose is a set of predefined model elements
that are needed to model a certain kind of system. The purpose of a specific
framework can be to define the architecture of systems of a certain kind or
to provide a set of reusable components. Frameworks are used as templates
when creating a new model."(Rose2002 on-line Help) You would use them as
resources to help in building you system.
For example, you would start a model with the J2EE framework if you
are going to utilize the Java API (more specifically, JavaBeans(tm), Java
Transaction Service(tm), or Java Naming & Directory Interface(tm) (JNDI)
components) in your web-application (which I assume is a JSP application).
The purpose for the RUP framework is:
        a) provide a good structure for a Rose model
        b) provide a style guide with naming conventions/suggestions
        c) identify a minimal set of diagrams to produce
        d) relate activities in RUP to Rose diagrams
        e) provide a basis for sophisticated SoDA reports. For instance
based on this structure most of the Rose parts of
the "Software Architecture Document" are generated from SoDA.

One suggestion would be to start out with the RUP framework, and
then you can always Load individual J2EE library packages as you find
needed. These packages (*.cat, *.sub) units are located in the
~/Rational/Rose/framework/frameworks/shared components/ folder. When you do
Load, you'd want to make sure you load both the *.cat and accompanying *.sub
units; e.g. "j2ee_javax.cat" and "j2ee_javax.sub".

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions on this.

Subject: (ROSE) Rose: J2EE model vs. RUP model

All,

I am new to the 'Java world', UP and Rose, so please let me know if the
questions are not clear.

I am just starting to use Rational Rose Enterprise Edition 2001a to develop
a web application with the J2EE architecture and MVC design pattern. I am a
little confused on what model to select when opening Rose. My boss wants to
use the RUP framework, but it seems that I should use the J2EE. I tried to
find documentation, but couldn't find anything detailing why/when to use
each model. Can someone explain the difference between the two Rose models
or direct me to some docuemention? Do I use them both at different stages
of the UP? Where is the best place to put the software architecture?
