Replying to my own message:

I think that I've half-solved the problem - at least with the 
re-sizing of activity diagrams.

When using swimlanes you must not have any text touching a 
swimlane boundary line. Doing so will cause the 'fit in window' 
function to misfunction.

I've made sure that all text is within swimlane boundary lines 
and now my activity diagrams resize properly.
