I was thinking, the metronome on my dear old Boss SE70 (a guitar multi-effect
processor) lets me define a tad more complex rythms (beat, half beat,
triplets...). Do you think the metronome could simply be a repeating 1-bar
segment which the user would edit at will ?

It's done per segment.

don't have any MIDI hardware to test them :-).
