Thanks for the detailed explanation.
Unfortunately I cannot see any indications of instrument names anywhere in
the GUI. I've looked at both the Instrument Parameters box and the
two levels of nested menus that appear when I click the right-hand
mouse-button on the label area:

 | MIDI software device | | MIDI soundcard synth #11 |

                                          | MIDI soundcard synth #13 |
                                          | MIDI soundcard synth #14 |

                                          | MIDI soundcard synth #16 |
                                           ------------------------------
Every menu item in menu 1 seems to trigger a nested menu whose contents
are very similar to the nested menu example above. The menu items in
each nested menu are identical to the menu item in the level 1 menu
except they each have a different number from 1 to 16 appended to them
as in the example nested menu above.

What are the two menus meant to do?
Where are the instrument names?

I cannot use it because the Program pulldown menu is greyed out, even after I
click to enable it in the Program toggle box.

I get nothing like that image. My track labels all remain as "<untitled>"
(I know I could edit them manually by double-clicking on each label but
I imagine that's not how you arrived at your results).
