The answer isn't at all obvious to me either, at first glance at least.

I just did a quick check to make sure basic selection commands weren't 
totally broken for undo in other circumstances as well, but I haven't 
managed to cause any crashes by simply running and undoing auto-beam 
commands by hand.  Have you?

That's true.  I would say in this case that you should probably commit 
it, simply because you've warned us about it and we have a better 
chance of fixing the bug afterwards.  If you commit it, I will 
endeavour to have a look and try to fix the problem you reported.

However, I wouldn't commit unless you also know you're going to have 
time to check back and maybe revert it if there are still unfixed 
problems later.  If you can't be sure of that, just send a patch to 
this list.  Patches that are still in development probably shouldn't go 
on the trackers.

Don't commit to trunk anything that you know can induce a new crash, 
without discussing it here first -- not even if the real bug isn't 
technically yours.
