Ted:

I did more experimentation with Eclipse on Ubuntu 18.04.

It turns out, the "Oxygen" version of Eclipse is available to be installed (using Gnome Software), and runs fine on 18.04.  It even successfully converted my workspace from the older level of Eclipse.

However, it isn't a Debian package - it's one of the new 'snappy packages', so it may only work on Ubuntu (I don't think the variants turn-on the snap package stuff).  An even a bigger potential problem, is that if you upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04, your Eclipse environment may not upgrade, and will probably need to be installed new.

You probably also have to get the C++ Eclipse plug-ins from Eclipse sources, rather than from the repository (as I have done in the past).

As I recall, at least one of you uses Eclipse.

  That's me.

Although I can successfully upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 with everything else, my Eclipse IDE will not initialize on 18.04.

I have found in the past that I simply need to reinstall Eclipse and all is well (expand it from the tar file into a new directory and run from there).  I've certainly had trouble going from one version of Ubuntu to the next and my original Eclipse install didn't work.  So, I always reinstall Eclipse with each new version of Ubuntu.

Full details of my approach are here:

The Install Eclipse section is the most relevant:

So if you use Eclipse, beware of upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04, at least until (or even 'if') that problem gets fixed.

I have no problems with Eclipse 4.7.3 (Oxygen) under Ubuntu 17.10. Haven't done the upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 yet.  Planning that sometime this month.

Ted.
