The more interesting question is, what do you get in your email header?
There should be a content-type or encoding directive. The UTF-8 seems
properly encoded. Maybe your email reader can't handle UTF-8?

you are right. but i checked this already and it looks fine for me.
thunderbird does handle utf-8.

Content-Type: text/plain;charset="utf-8"
MIME-Version: 1.0
Subject: utf-8 test
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit

it seems for me that my utf-8 text has been treated as non-utf-8 and
converted to utf-8 again.
