Sorry, I thought we were talking about putting all the commands in a script, not the individual ones. What does putting that one command in a script gain you from just cut and pasting the command from the web page? >> At least with the manual instructions you can post to a newsgroup or >> mailing list: >> >> I've done A and that worked, then B and that worked, then C and I got >> this error message. Why wouldn't you cut and paste? Surely no-one is trying to copy these things by hand? That would be madness. > OTOH if you can say: I did ./CLI03 then ./CLI04 then ./CLI05 ... at least > everyone will know that you ran the commands that were provided. If you cut and paste they do as well. Keeping the instructions up-to-date is a bit less onerous than writing these scripts that have been suggested, I think. And the instructions aren't being updated that frequently anyway: http://www.riscos.info/index.php?title=RPCEmu_Linux_Guide&action=history > Or do you think > that total beginners following incorrect instructions are going to enjoy the > experience? But .. but .. it's the true linux way! I don't follow this at all. Of course no-one is going to enjoy following incorrect instructions. I understand that beginners don't like command lines. Some "experts" don't like the command line! But if there's noone willing to do the work to make an easy install version then you're stuck with what you're given! Did I mention RPCEmu on Puppy Linux? Someone is prepared to do this sort of work, just not in the exact way that's been suggested. >> That someone's not me (I'm perfectly happy doing the CLI dance). > > But how do YOU know precisely what to put in each command? It's in the instructions. When I installed it on Linux (a long time ago) I cut and pasted the instructions in order, following the instructions after each one. >> It's presumably not you either. > > I know less than Dave Symes about building/installing rpcemu, but have a lot > of experience, though not recently, of assembling & linking another OS from > scratch. Dtanis, Caliston, Jymbob, GavinW, Pnaulls, Joty from a quick scan of the history. For these scripts to help they would need to be included with the download presumably so it would need to be someone who knows how to put them in the download. That's probably someone who's actually doing the port, so Peter Naulls, I think. Anyone can easily update the instructions. You just click on Edit on the page and start typing. It's a completely different proposition putting scripts in the download.
