I don't think there is any point trying to extend IPv4 life too much - this will happen largely automatically (IPv4 after-market dealings) but perhaps AfriNIC could simply make it more difficult to provide the remainder space. a) For totally new organisations requesting space - they need to provide IPv6 plans. b) For organisations with existing space - the need to apply for IPv6 space and show roll-out plans with appropriate time scales before any new allocations? Might be harsh - but something along these lines. Thinking of SAIX (Telkom SA) - how can one "encourage" them to roll out IPv6 on ADSL - which is where I'd expect most new IPv4 requests to end up.
On Routing Registry - I'd love AfriNIC to have one. Its already queried whenever one does a "whois" lookup to all databases... and would make it administratively easier to have all details in one "location" only. On implementing IPv6 - I like John Curran's suggestion - which is close to what I'm doing already.. http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-jcurran-v6transitionplan-01.txt (It therefore must be good :-) I see that AfriNIC has taken this last point to heart and have assigned an IPv6 address to "www.afrinic.net".. however... traceroute to www.afrinic.net (196.216.2.1), 30 hops max, 46 byte packets 1 cispos2.posix.co.za (160.124.48.254) 0.803 ms 0.858 ms 0.848 ms 2 cisrb1-cispos2.posix.co.za (160.124.1.53) 25.961 ms 41.111 ms 12.691 ms 3 168.209.89.53 (168.209.89.53) 12.593 ms 12.561 ms 12.495 ms 4 cp1-jinx-gi0-1.rtr.isnet.net (196.26.0.253) 13.432 ms 13.123 ms 12.479 ms 5 ge0-3.br1.jnb7.alter.net (196.30.228.241) 13.010 ms 12.955 ms 13.240 ms 6 ge0-2.cr1.jnb7.alter.net (196.31.17.161) 13.958 ms 15.593 ms 15.440 ms 7 srp3-0-0.gw2.jnb6.alter.net (196.30.156.4) 17.841 ms 17.197 ms 17.849 ms MPLS Label=85 CoS=0 TTL=0 S=0 8 vlan9.hr5.jnb6.alter.net (196.30.156.139) 17.077 ms 15.770 ms 16.689 ms 9 gtw-out-afrinic.afrinic.net (196.30.227.66) 16.294 ms 24.693 ms 16.095 ms 10 ns1.afrinic.net (196.216.2.1) 17.460 ms 16.767 ms 16.644 ms traceroute to www.afrinic.net (2001:42d0::200:80:1) from 2001:42a0:1000:ff02:20e:cff:fe3e:99ca, 30 hops max, 24 byte packets 1 cispos2-fe0-0.posix.co.za (2001:42a0:1000:ff02::1) 0.841 ms 0.947 ms 0.823 ms 2 cisrb1-cispta2.posix.co.za (2001:42a0:0:ff01::1) 13.832 ms 13.858 ms 13.646 ms 3 cisldn1-cisrb1.posix.co.za (2001:42a0:1:ff01::2) 197.47 ms 313.796 ms 214.204 ms 4 ae0-112.lon11.ip6.tiscali.net (2001:668:0:3::4000:51) 195.477 ms 191.338 ms 224.729 ms 5 so-0-0-0.ams11.ip6.tiscali.net (2001:668:0:2::1:181) 289.653 ms 261.461 ms 235.211 ms 6 e0-0-0.6b2.AMS7.Alter.net (2001:7f8:1::a501:2702:1) 258.502 ms 255.465 ms 219.348 ms 7 6b1.jnb6.za.uu.net (2001:600:8:3::2) 419.708 ms 422.217 ms 475.687 ms 8 www.afrinic.net (2001:42d0::200:80:1) 445.819 ms 424.772 ms 448.075 ms We need some local IPv6 Peering!!!! -- . . ___. .__ Posix Systems - Sth Africa /| /| / /__ [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Mark J Elkins, SCO ACE, Cisco CCIE / |/ |ARK \_/ /__ LKINS Tel: +27 12 807 0590 Cell: +27 82 601 0496 _______________________________________________ rpd mailing list [email protected] https://lists.afrinic.net/mailman/listinfo.cgi/rpd
