i see no problem with this. there even does not need to be a 4.1.x which
is declared as stable.

there need not be a nightly release. after ordering things in my mind,
the main difference is:

do we need to map -rcX to git snapshot 45b6c18f1d13be2ff89ee62024ba...
or do we allready have this information somewhere accessible.

besides that, we could skip the "rc" string and simply use 4.0.12-1 -
like a build number which is used by some linux distributions.

another nice aspect would be to integrate the git hash into the initial
startup message or in some status output.

maybe it would be good to make a final statement before implementing and
releasing it. so we do not have to revert/skip/create the version 5 and
6 and discard 3/4 as a "versioning experiment" ;)
