FWIW, I don't have a problem with this change. I always sorta cringed when we'd do the cheer BEFORE the fscking game even kicked off. I'm of the opinion that it shows much arrogance on our behalf. Now when the game has finished and Bama has kicked their ass, then we can let'em have it!! It is a great cheer but should only be used at the appropriate time. I'm cool with it.

Million Dollar Band to quit playing "Rammer Jammer" during games

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- "Rammer Jammer," a popular cheer at University of Alabama football games that's seen by some people as an example of poor sportsmanship, can't be played during games any more, the UA Athletics Department ruled.

The department has instructed the Million Dollar Band to hold off on playing the cheer until after a victory.

"What we have asked is that they not play it before the end of a game," said Larry White, sports information director. "This is in the spirit of sportsmanship and a ruling by the Southeastern Conference trying to tone things down."

The cheer, which is about 25 years old, has been criticized because of its perceived use of inappropriate language.

The line, "We just beat the hell out of you!" is seen by some as overly aggressive and arrogant, said Brian Murphy, president of Yell Crew, a student spirit organization.

SEC athletics directors approved a news statement on sportsmanship last month. It reads, in part, "It is the responsibility of each member institution to establish policies for sportsmanship and ethical conduct in intercollegiate athletics consistent with the educational mission and goals of the institution."

The cheer was banned in 1994 in response to an NCAA plea for member schools to quell the taunting and fighting that had occurred during games the previous season. The athletics department reinstated the cheer in 1996.

The phrase "Rammer Jammer" referred to the name of a student humor magazine from the 1920s. [...]
