Jay Lisby Dies
By Kirk McNair
Date: Jun 23, 2004

Jeffrey E. Lisby-Jay to Alabama Crimson Tide followers who have known him
through his reporting in 'BAMA Magazine and on BamaMag.com the past four
years-died early Wednesday morning in his hometown of Columbus, Georgia. Jay
had undergone surgery for cancer in the spring of 2003. This spring he was
diagnosed with a return of the cancer, this time inoperable and incurable.
He was 47.

In addition to his parents, Carroll and Mary, he is survived by a brother,
Greg, and sister, Nina Beth.

A memorial service will be held later. Arrangements are incomplete.

After earning bachelor's and master's degree, Jeffrey Lisby embarked on a
teaching career. Although he had not attended The University of Alabama, he
had a lifelong love of the Crimson Tide. Therefore, he made the decision to
go back to school. He entered The University and began working on his third
college degree, this time in journalism, in 2000.

Although known to his friends and family as Jeffrey all his life, when he
came to The Capstone he went on the internet as "Jay," and the name stuck
with his new family. In the spring of 2000 he began going to Alabama
football practices and posting his views. That led to permanent employment
with 'BAMA and an end to his quest for a journalism degree.

His official title was associate editor of 'BAMA Magazine, but he was best
known for his work in running BamaMag.com. Few sports reporters in the past
four years enjoyed greater access and admiration of Alabama athletes and
coaches than did Jay Lisby.
