FYI:

"Downgrading" to the compiler found in RH6.2 will work. Everything seems
to work without any troubles:

rpm -e gcc                                      <--- erases the current
compiler
rpm -ivh egcs-1.1.2-30                <--- installs the "old" compiler

I am not sure if we should also downgrade the C preprocessor, but just
in case, here it is:

rpm -e cpp
rpm -ivh cpp-1.1.2-30
