iv'v only done this with the NE driver as a module.
I had a PC104 CPU with a davicom ne clone where the Station Address
was not readable, so i had to do some tinkering;)

With insmod ne resp. starting the kernel you should get something like
ne.o: blalblakdf ,,,, ne2000 card found at io using irq ..

with insmod ne io=0x... irq=. only this adress will be probed.

with insmod ne io=0x... irq=. bad=0xbad some of the probing will be more
lenient, and a bit more verbose.

have a look in ne.c under usr/src/linux/drivers/net

default io is 0x280 irq usually 5
