[rtl] USING STI/CLI pporach for benchmarking

This may be a sensitive issue,  what with S/W patents and the like,  but what public information is there about using the RTL approach to get precise performance measurements of either soft real time or hard real time performance.
 

This could be in conjunction with a code instrumentation approach or without it.

Any interesting performance measuring example code out there?  Trace code? Code coverage?
