The only answer I've ever gotten -- even from the Linux system programming
newsgroups -- is to reboot. It's been suggested that there are subtle ways
one could modify the kernel to make it possible, but it's also been
suggested that whenever a module crashes, there's no guarantee that the rest
of the kernel (which is totally visible to the module) is intact either.
