Keith, It is very true that nobody has enough time to build everything
from a kit. But I think you might be missing the idea but building a
kit, wiring, tracklaying, etc. should be enjoyable. If you dread doing
something you either need to have someone else help along or become an
armchair modeler!--actually has anybody ever modeled an armchair?? ha
There was a time when I built a typical wooden craftsman kit every week
and I spent about 3 months reworking a AF alco to scale standards
(remotor, drive, detail, and finish). When American Models came along I
could build a small fleet of cars in a week and I spent about a month
detailing a couple of FP-7's, so things got easier.
After I started my layout nearly 20 years ago, I spent a lot less
time building freight cars and detailing engines, but to this day I will
pull out a kit (mostly Pacific Rail) and build it--makes for a pleasant
change of pace. I went through some problems with DCC so when I got in
trouble there I relaxed with by building some scenery. I have been
working (on but mostly off) constructing the BTS Cabin creek mine for
several years, in the meantime I've probably built a dozen smaller
structures. Between, doing almost continual building, I operate trains.
Hopefully, our group will start actual operating sessions, but I still
need to build a couple of old Kinsman kits so when I feel the urge I will!
