Somehow I have always thought of Claud as THE founder of the NASG. The very
first issue of the S Gauge Herald, September 1960 described the system of
"Round Robin "circuit letters, which Claud had started in the mid '50s. The
very Herald Yearbook has a listing of rail organizations, MNRA, etc. Under
National Association of S Gaugers starts with "This association's purpose is
to unite and further S gauge. It goes about this task through a series of
round robin letters." It goes on to identify G. Claud Wade as the "General
Director".
The first Herald issue of Volume two, Fall 1961, the first after I
took over as publisher, included the "Notes, News and Flashes of the NASG"
which covered almost two full pages and was signed by Claud as General
Director of NASG. The NASG column was continued while the Herald was
published but the last column signed by Claud was December, 1962. Bernie
Thomas became General Director by the January 1963 issue but Claud regularly
contributed to the column the latest news on the Berkshire progress, which
he always considered an NASG project.
In the final issue of the Herald, December 1978 the NASG column,
then submitted by Dick Cataldi as NASG president included "The S Gauge
Herald and the NASG both grew out of the old circuit letters of the 1950's."
Claud seemed to drop out of sight by then. I missed his usually long and
somewhat illegible letters but always appreciated his devotion to S scale.
Thanks, Claud. Wally Collins

Subject: S-Scale Modeling Claude Wade
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch archives had the following under "Death Notices"
in the Classified Advertising section on May 3, 2005:
WADE, CLAUD, of St. Louis, Missouri, on Friday, April 29, 2005; loving
husband of Janice Wade; loving father of Mark (Julie) and Scott (Mary) Wade;
loving grandfather of Matthew and Becky Wade; dear brother of Bailey Wade
and Mary Paxton; our dear brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend to many.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at FOREVER Bellerive
Chapel (740 North Mason Rd., St. Louis, MO 63141) at 10:00 a.m. until time
of service at 11:00 a.m. Private interment to follow.
The full announcement is a bit longer (114 words) but you have to pay to
download the remainder. Perhaps the Dispatch should get the remainder and
do an obit. Claude was one of NASG's and contemporary S scales founding
fathers. In his later years after selling SSL&S, Claude used to grouse
about being forgotten. It is sadly ironic that it has taken a while to find
out about his passing.
