  I think you just made my point for me... "In years past" says it all... as 
in, most likely, they are no longer made (at least to the best of my knowledge) 
because nobody wants them.  Why?  Because "ACCURATE" models are now neing made.
   
  Maybe a poll should be created to ask one simple question...

accuracy (toyish in nature) to another that was as (prototypically) close as 
could be with today's technology, which would you choose?"
   
  With both Walthers and Branchline (and possibly others?) offering the 
incredibly accurate models that they are offering, (not to mention the numerous 
core kits and sides that are also availible (because modelers are not willing 
to settle for the cheap stuff offered by Bachmann, LifeLike, ConCor, etc, 
etc...)) the answer to that is obvious.
