Andre (and others)....There are only a few firms making S scale
painted, lettered, almost-RTR freight cars these days. And many of the
paint schemes are no longer being produced. What to do? Use eBay to
buy stuff that was discontinued years and years ago. Build kits to
provide variety beyond the almost-RTR stuff to avoid that it-all-looks-
the-same appearance to your fleet. Use eBay for hard-to-find kits that
were plentiful in the 1970s and 1980s. I do believe more variety of S
stuff is sold via eBay than any other single retail outlet. How's that
for a controversial comment? Having fun yet....Ed L.

I agree. EBay (Evil Bay?) is a great place to try to get S stuff.
Sometimes brass does not do too well if you are a seller compared to the HO
market. However, if you are a buyer, you can sometimes get pretty good
deals.

I would say that a good 1/3 of my stuff came from EBay. And I would say
that the prices balanced themselves out. Sometimes I got a great deal and
sometimes I paid for that great deal. I guess the most important thing is
to watch and be aware.

Here's another controversial item. I would venture that the OMI S Scale
USRA Light 2-8-2 and the S Scale Ambroid Snowplow are the two most sought
after items on EBay. Then there are the Kinsman wood passenger cars. It
would be interesting to get a list up of the most desired older stuff. Then
again, if someone already has managed to get it, it is no longer desired.

As with all else in life, timing is everything. Some rather naive EBay
sellers end their sales on poor days and poor times. Unless the item is
really hot, it won't go for much more than the asking bid. Case in point, I
got my first snowplow for over $100 USD, ended on a Saturday night. The
last 2 I got went for only $80 for the pair! The auction went off at 3:00
am. Now, only wacko's like me would stay up for something like that.

The best time to sell is Saturday eve or Sunday eve. You may have a problem
if some of the bidders are into Desperate Housewifes on Sunday;->

Anyway, check out EBay and get familiar with the prices. A fair price is
the price that you are willing to pay and the seller is comfortable with.

I sell HO stuff (still finding more to get rid of) and am content at this
point just to have it go out of the house. Most of the time the selling
prices balance out.

Hope some of this helps.

cheers,

Andy Malette
