Pieter/Mike/Friends,
I have done a little work on one of the paper building kits that
Clever Bros. have put out. The low cost, decent detail, and yes, layers
help to make this a good alternative to other construction materials.
My main concern is the possibility of warping and water damage. Of
course many people of been happy with the Walther's type paper
backgrounds with buildings, terrain and sky in one, although when used
by themselves are pretty far from realistic. Some modelers have enough
ability to paint (or have artist friends) some very realistic false
fronts and backgrounds. This is probably the best solution as the
painting is totally custom to the layout. I have heard good and bad
impressions about the work created by outfits like the Background
Warehouse, but the ability of making a false fronts into a scene seems
like a great way of doing things.
The problem we all have is that the distance from a true 3-D area
on a layout to the wall may only be a inch. I have built and worked on
still and video sets where we have a least a few feet for this
transaction to happen. Most of us have been fooled by the Hollywood
sets of the past and especially with the sets and computer work of
todays motion picture work. We have the problem in that we are
basically building a still life which is subject to much more scrutiny.
I would suggest that if a true photographic flat be made that it be
gradually softened somewhat to give a little more distant feel to the
work. This in turn will let the eye see the background as 'fluff' and
come back to admire the 3D items up front.
