My bigest supprise was that the engineer seemed to be cramped into a very
small space and had banks of cabinets all around, could not see the other side
of the engine...where did the other crew person sit? and how did the engeneer
get around inside the engine??? Dr. K. Loeb (Peter)

Cab is very cramped. "Fireman'", featherbedding, ya know, sat on opposite
side of locomotive. Had to fold engineers seat fwd to actually get thru the
cab door and into the "motor". Window armrest also folded. Small window was
all the fwd vision you had, down the "barrel" of the locomotive. All of the
controls were within easy reach, including the "dead man". Once the engineeer
sat down and started to move, he didn't move until the next stop. Narrow
aisles down both sides, to the other end, as they were bi-directional. EVERY
G
had an "F" on one end so that the shop crews could identify the "front". All
the Pennsy electrics had a "lift-off" cab or body, similar to toy trains for
easy access to service.
I was fortunate to be able to serve as a "docent" in 4935 before the DEP
made it and all other G's off-limits. Suspected PCB's forced the removal of
ALL the paint on the units, inside and out. Some are still being repainted.
Lost the "flavor" of actually having worked for a living.
Anecdotally, at least one Christmas Eve, Santa Claus ran a G from the
Keystone Main to the Corridor to Pennsylvania Station. I didn't see it, BUT,
I
know Santa and the Engineer.
