I love the Pennsylvania - New York Central bantering.

Milton Schapp our governor at that time, fought the merger in the courts and
did whatever he could to stop it otherwise.
Obviously he lost, so did Pennsylvania and its railroad.

a.. "February 1, 1968- The Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central
Railroad merge to form the Penn Central. Terms of the merger with the New York,
New Haven and Hartford Railroad have not yet been agreed with the Interstate
Commerce Commission; in the interim, the Penn Central will financially support
the New Haven."

Wikipedia has an excellent summary on the history of the Pennsylvania Railroad
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

I for one remember that the big fight over the merger back then was that the
Pennsylvania Railroad was rich and the New York Central was not, as the NYC had
invested in too much real estate and was financially broke..
That is how I remember it being presented in our papers at that time.

Myself? I didn't pay much attention to all the "hollering" as I was too busy
making a living, besides, I was a Reading Company man and they had plenty of
fights with the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad themselves.

LOve and Kisses,
 Billy Fraley
