Just to add a little more information to the discussion:
The experience of our local layout construction group illustrates the
need to get behind the effort to produce a ready-to-run scale turnout
in S-scale:
Our three-person rotating layout construction group is comprised of
myself, Sam Powell and Richard Lind (Sam has discussed our group in
the Dispatch).
When Sam Powell decided to start a new S-scale layout, he wanted to
streamline the construction process and he investigated all available
scale turnouts. His conclusion? All of the available options had
enough flaws or required almost as much work to debug and install as
building turnouts from scratch. So, his new layout has beautiful
handlaid trackwork. But, Sam reports that every time someone sees
his layout and gets excited about S-scale, the excitement fades when
he mentions that you will probably have to scratchbuild your
turnouts, or spend time debugging the turnouts that are available.
No Sale!
Richard Lind wants to build a portable display layout, to promote S-
scale at shows. He decided to use S Helper track and turnouts,
cutting back on the turnout leads to minimize the tinplate look of
the #3 turnouts. Richard is an S-scaler. Don Thompson has told
Richard that his new scale 2-8-0 will not operate on the SHS #3
turnout. Sell the public on switching to S-scale? I don't think so!
The discussion about making such a turnout easy to motorize is a
great idea -- make it simple and make it familiar to HO modelers.
Again -- can we get this done?
