Bill, John and Friends, I did post an answer to the orginial poster yesterday, so I will address all the others. Although my yards are filled with SHS and PRS reefers I sometimes think one should do a few of those old cars ( and do them right) just to realize where we have been. Right now I'm following a discussion on a photo list regarding creativity and what it really is. Those folks are talking about knowing where you've been as a start to being creative in the future. So much of our world has been taken over by the ready made, techno stuff that it should have given us a better chance of being creative with our railroads (or photos), but that's really not happening.
With that in mind, I have a few old the older generation cars around, incuding one with cardboard sides that I hope to keep running. I am right now awaiting the arrival of Cryer Gray's new emergency gondola. But I have a Branch Line models version (60's era wooden kit with orginial price of about $3) that will be running on the same layout. Bill's list of parts does seem a little daunting but it might result in a better model than what we have from our newer manufacturers. It also lets us create variations that we will never have in S. Examples might be plywood sheathed reefers that PFE rebuilt for a short time or how about SFD reefers that had their roof hatches opening in the opposite direction. To go a bit further, one can easily ulitize newer parts from SHS and PRS (DesPlains) to replace some of those cast metal parts. Many of the parts made by Grandt are as good as they get anywhere ( I have been using a On3 brake rod set that is good, their ladders and door hardware are also first rate). So except for the prepainted sides and the inner 'box' that are wood, you will have a very modern kit that should go together as easily as the PRS kits. The Rex trucks, Ace hardware, and Miller wheels likewise need to be replaced with trucks from 4 differenent sources---SHS, AM, PRS and DesPlains own trucks. I think a car made this way could compare favorably with the RTR stuff and will most likely be easier on the wallet. Bob Werre BobWphoto.com John O wrote: > This is doable.
