That's why I posted on the Milwaukee Road car. Builders and shop photos are generally the ones in Cyclopedias, but they don't guarantee the paint scheme ever existed in more than a "one off" situation. Photos of locomotives and cars in service are the real key. I have no idea on the J&L cars, don't have one so it was never something I dug into, but it certainly sounds plausible.
