Bill,

There have been occasions (not recently) that the modules have been set up
in point to point. Most do not know that the CJSS Get Together was
originally about setting up a layout to run operations. When I first went
there in 1987 the church hall was filled with a layout. The loop was a just
small part of the total scheme.

There was 1 Jersey City (Comminupaw?) Show that a loop was set up. At the
last second 2 of the corner modules on the same end were turned outward
making them the ends of the line. It was supposed to inspire switching.
There was a problem in getting the layout running. Don Thompson was there
trying to get the electrical bugs figured out. We were using his brass CNJ
Alco RS3 as the test engine. Suddenly it started to run. For about 30
seconds everyone was standing there watching it, relieved that we were
finally running until we realized that no one had the throttle. Don DeWitt
made a actual leaping dive catch to save Dons RS3 from hitting the great
beyond in an unintended reenactment of the CNJ bridge dive. As I remember
it, that set up did not go over well with the viewing public. We were not
"running trains". It also forces the crew to be MUCH more attentive in
keeping trains running. The latter was the deciding factor in not setting up
there point to point again. Ahh those were the days though..... We were
always forced to set up in the worst dankest room available as the CNJ
station was in an ongoing renovation. We had 40 degree winds blasting
through the room and rain at times within a few feet of the modules.

I will admit that I have not embraced realistic operation yet. For now, just
getting the trains looking and running good is more them enough for me,
especially in a hit n run module set up like CJSS. So yes the loop set up is
OK with me, but not so for others in CJSS, as I witnessed on many occasions.
Mike Ferarro's 3 level module gets a lot of use. Perhaps I will evolve into
operations once I get something of my own set up.

With the change of ownership of the 32' long Allen Hump Yard module, I can
almost guarantee next years CJSS will be significantly different then it has
been in 10+ years. In the few times in the past it was set up as a branch
line, and probably will be again in 2009.

We could use new plain utilitarian 2" x 4" modules. It does not have to be
some gigantic 1000 car capacity yard to play along. We are rolling in on our
1 year anniversary at S-Mod. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/S-Mod The fall
module momentum is picking up again. I see great things happening for new
and refurbished S modules for 2009.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
