Hi All,
Since Bill asked, yes the Allentown hump is still a very active yard. I
ride my bike by it
about once a week. Looking at the photos Stan and Don have referenced, the top
of the
air photo is roughly northeast. The river is flowing roughly east at this
point. That's
toward the right. The photo doesn't do justice to the hills on the road along
the yard.
They are not huge compared to their neighbors, but road isn't flat! The bottom
of the dip
is at the spot that looks like an upside down "V". The baseball field is part
of Keck Park.
The housing development across from the ball field is being enlarged to cover
the wooded
area south to the road. In the satellite view the large building on the south
side of the
river is a prison. As Bill Lane mentioned there is a canal alongside the
river. It is clearly
visible in both images. Note too the ex-Lehigh Valley track along the south
side of the
river. The large water tower in the upper center is the Allentown State
Hospital. If you
squint hard you can see my house in the upper right hand corner. It's tough to
see since
it is painted green! ;~) From the color of the trees in air photo I'd say it
was taken about
this time of year. Anyone wanting to visit the area should look me up. I'll
give you the $3
tour.
