All --
Uncle Ed opined that a "perfect turnout" might cost ten to fifteen dollars more
than one that's not perfect. I disagree. There is no excuse for Shinohara not
to have perfect turnouts at the same price. Tooling that meets spec is no more
expensive than flawed tooling -- Either needs a design spec to begin with.
Of course, now that the secret's out that our turnouts leave something to be
desired, anyone wishing to mass-produce correct turnouts will have to create
new
tooling that will have to be amortised. The cost would have to be amortized
over the estimated life span of the tooling and the quantiuty expected to be
sold. But in terms of constant dollars, such an effort should cost mo more
than
Shinohara's tooling effort some three decades ago.
